Martin Newth’s research investigates the relationship between landscape, identity, and the apparatus of photography. His experimental practice includes transforming bunkers into cameras, building bespoke devices, and using long exposures to examine how images are made. By recalling early photographic technologies, his work questions how we relate to the world through images in the digital age. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Martin has embraced film-essays, merging art and teaching to explore changing perceptions of place. His Arts Council England-commissioned film In Transit encouraged Hounslow residents to create their own films, examining how participants can have genuine agency in artistic processes. Martin’s research also addresses pedagogy, focusing on collaborative practices. His .PNG project, co-led with Pawel Mendrek, established a pan-European exchange exploring art education’s role in diverse communities through exhibitions, conferences, and publications. This participatory approach informs both his academic leadership and curriculum development.
