biography

Graham Lister (b.1982) is a painter and researcher based in Glasgow, Scotland. In 2016, he completed a Practice-based PhD at the Glasgow School of Art. He holds and MFA from Gray's School of Art and an MA(Hons) from the University of Glasgow (Art History) His ongoing painting practice is concerned with using the activity of painting as a way of distilling physical forms, surfaces and visual gestures. His work encompasses repeated and gradual abstraction processes which investigate visual codes, practical techniques and surface materialities within painting. Recent research relates specifically to how painting can draw into focus issues of proximity and distance through the creation of highly detailed painterly surfaces, expanded painting practices and the creation of exploratory personal artistic writings. His interests additionally include consideration of what the artist studio represents; how it offers both positive possibilities for making, but equally can also represent an obstruction to creative making.
